CHAPTER 15

“Yes, sir. Destination is in sight… Affirmative. Orders confirmed: resume patrol around the island until further orders. Copy. Out.”

Ensign Ralf Willis placed the radio down and spun the helm, taking the boat around the north side of the island. He could hear a drizzling sound behind him. Glancing over his shoulder, he could see his fellow guardsman urinating over the transom of the forty-one foot U.S.C.G. response boat.

“Seriously, man? You wait until we’re on site to do that?”

Ensign Jacob Anthony zipped up and moaned with relief. “Sorry. That energy drink decided it wanted to escape all of a sudden.”

“Shouldn’t be bringing that stuff aboard. The Commander’ll kill ya.”

“He’ll never know,” Jacob said.

Ralf stared at him. “Wait…you didn’t…”

“Won’t confirm or deny the current presence of the can.”

“Great. Litter the ocean,” Ralf said. Jacob scoffed. The guardsman, who was six years his junior, was always uptight about these kinds of things. Jacob always assumed it was because of the chick he was trying to impress back in Key Elliot.

“Oh, quit being such an idealist,” Jacob said. “She’s not here to swoon over your ‘save-the-earth’ routine.”

“It’s not just being an idealist. This island is private property,” Ralf said. “If the owner sees you do anything stupid, we’ll be dead meat.”

“Good. Maybe we’d be grounded,” Jacob replied. He leaned over the transom. He was bored out of his mind. The trip from the mainland felt longer than ever. The issues went deeper than that—he simply didn’t even want to be here. He resented his father for forcing him into the Coast Guard. Then again, it was either this or the marines, or be out on the street. Of course, he had the misconception that the training in the U.S.C.G. was a cakewalk compared to the rest of the military. Surprisingly, it wasn’t. Unfortunately, no amount of discipline would purge his bitterness. He was just a man in his mid-twenties biding his time. At least, he was a man in the sense that he was full-grown.

Ralf, who was twenty-years old, couldn’t stand working with this idiot. He couldn’t believe he was younger, yet more mature than this asshole. Why did the Coast Guard accept this idiot? His uniform looked like crap; he barely shaved, he was late to formation and drills. Twice, he had been reprimanded. His poor attitude was just the icing on top of the shit cake. Yet, he always behaved just well enough to keep himself from being kicked out. It was clear that Jacob knew, despite his feelings and behavior, that an early discharge wouldn’t look good on his resume, and that afterwards he’d have to find a job, because no way in hell was his dad letting him live in the house any longer. Thus, he was stuck, with no way to be happy. He wanted to coast by, but coasting by also meant boredom. Then again, he had no desire to be on the choppers, rescuing people in storms, or dealing with smugglers. He hated it all. Same with college and retail.
